Decking Care & Deck Maintenance

deck care Decking Care & Deck Maintenance

Clean

Even treated wood will not look its best after a long winter and a wet spring, so a little time spent cleaning will pay dividends for the summer months.

We would recommend that you sweep your deck regularly and hose it down when dirt accumulates. Allowing dirt and other organic matter such as leaf litter or soil to accumulate on your deck, increases the risk of fungal infection. The organic matter could not only carry the source of fungal infection but may hinder drainage and thus provides damp conditions that they need to survive. There are many effective cleaning agents available. Many are useful to remove algae growth which can occur and without cleaning this could become a slip hazard. Cleaning your deck with a pressure washer at the beginning and end of the season is a recommended course of action.

Also available is Hickson Decor ANTISLIP™, a clear brush-on aggregate coating which will help provide sure footing on timber decks and steps.

Have you considered the new Q-GripTM range of slip resistant deckboards for the potentially slip sensitive areas of your deck?

Re-seal and protection

The finished deck should be kept clean and for good looks, resealed with a brush-on water repellent every year – Hickson Decor WAXCOAT. For best results re-apply water repellent when the deck is dry after pressure washing.

Stain

Introduce personality by adding a coloured stain to your deck. Stains are designed to blocks the greying effects of ultra violet light. Please note, that the water repellent properties of Q-deck® products means that organic solvent based stains are most suited. Water based stains are not recommended particularly on newly fitted Q-Deck® products as the water repellent can affect the adhesion of the stain to the timber. This affect diminishes over time due to ware and tare. Please bear in mind it will need regular re-staining and heavy foot traffic areas will have to be re-stained more frequently than other areas. If applying to Q-Grip® slip resistant deckboards, care must be taken not to apply stain to the aggregate strip areas as it will not adhere or dry properly on these areas. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when working with deck maintenance products.

Take care

It is advisable to regularly check for any proud shards or splinters of timber and remove should they occur for safety reasons.

What to expect

Small surface splits can occur in all components during the warmer months. This happens as the timber dries and shrinks. In the winter months the splits will tend to close as the timber swells.

Twinson®

Its always best to remove dirty marks as soon as possible using water, mild cleaner and a sponge. In most cases your Twinson ® deck can be cleaned with a pressure washer combined with, if necessary, a mild cleaning product. For food marks(such as ketchup, wine, soup, fruit juice, cola, coffee) scrub well with diluted bleach solution then rinse well with water.

How to build a deck. Part 7 — Fitting deck handrails and decking balustrades.
Part 7 shows how a post and rail type decking balustrade is fitted. The system also known as an American handrail system utilises a wide flat top hand rail and deck spindles or balusters that are face fixed to two horizontal rails. The system is very quick to fit and is versatile in that the height of the handrail off the deck can be raised without the need for special lengths of timber. This can be especially useful if a decking handrail height of 1100mm is stipulated by building control for safety reasons. Q-Deck also offer a strength rated decking balustrade system. How to build a deck. Part 06 — Fitting decking boards.
Part 05 shows how to fit Q-Deck york style decking. The boards are secured to the joists below using two decking screws on every joist at points roughly 25% in from the each edge of the board. The screws should be 2.5 times the depth of the decking board and for total peace of mind made of stainless steel. Allowing the boards to become surface dry before fitting is required and minimises the affects of shrinkage and swelling after fitting. Surface dry deck boards should be laid with a 5-6mm gap between them using a series of temporary spacer. In warm dry conditions this gap will get wider and in cold wet conditions it will get narrower. A schematic diagram of the decking continues to evolve.

Part 4 explains how to go about preparing your site for the timber deck by carefully mapping the area with strings and wooden pegs in the first instance. The use of string allows you to create perfect right angles using the 3-4-5 measuring technique. Holes can now be dug should you require deck support posts. The area beneath the decking is now ready to cover with weed suppressing fabric and pea shingle. To find out more about Q-Deck visit http://www.qualitydecking.co.uk/timber_decking.php

How to Install Garden Decking

You have been to buy your Q-Deck decking what next? you needs some useful guidelines for installing garden decking from Q-Deck!

The over site should be:

  • Free Draining
  • Designed to minimise the future growth of vegetation
  • Solid for Ground Level patio style Decks / Decking
  • The sub frame supports the decking and balustrading and bears onto the over site. It is very important that it is well designed and constructed. Get this right and you’ll have a firm and easy maintainable deck structure, get it wrong and problems can arise in the future.

Here are four typical sub frame designs used in the U.K.

Patio Style Decking

this Deck uses raft type construction on an area of your garden area that drains sufficiently well.

lowlevel How to Install Garden Decking
Low Level Decking

Post and beam type construction, where you may have a limited final deck height.

elevated How to Install Garden Decking
Elevated Decking

Post and beam type construction, where you may have a sloping site, the need for a multi-tier decks or simply where the final deck height is not an issue.

Deck Over Existing Patio

Battens, joists or beams bear on the existing structurally sound concrete slab (ie. 100mm slab on top of 100mm compact hardcore as a minimum) via either durable packing material or sufficiently strong galvanized angle brackets to ensure the decking timbers are out of ground contact.

Fitting Newels

If balustrading is planned, fit your newel posts before laying decking. Double beam construction using Q-Deck® PLUS multi-purpose posts provides the ideal newel post housing.

Newel posts should be fixed in at least two directions ideally three. The best method is to bolt them to a joist or a beam however for speed you can use suitable structural landscaping screws but these do not provide as secure a construction as through bolting.

Fitting deckboards

Deck boards should be surface dry and laid with no less than a 6mm gap between boards (this allows for seasonal shrinkage or swelling to the decking). Maintain this gap when fitting boards around newel posts for a neat finish whilst still allowing water ‘run off’.

It is advisable to loosely lay components, ie. in particular deck boards, out on the finished sub frame prior to securing them. The longer they are left to become surface dry the less the effects of shrinkage will be apparent after fixing them. The timber decking can also be cut and sanded more easily when dry.

It is advisable to pre-drill pilot holes near the end of deck boards to avoid splitting.

Fix deck boards with corrosion resistant screws, or for the very best results use stainless steel screws (2 screws 15-20% of it’s width in from each edge of the decking).

Laying in patterns or at a 45° angle efficiently utilises any length purchased.

Fitting handrails and spindles

The height of the spindles and handrail depends on how far the deck surface is off the ground. Building regulations state that for ‘low-level’ decks up to 600mm from ground level, the height should be 900mm. For ‘high level’ decks over 600mm high, the height should be 1100mm. However, you may also choose to incorporate one purely as a design feature. There are so many Q-Deck plus components and thus construction techniques related to balustrading that it is necessary to detail how to construct them fully in the downloadable guide. Here are some finished Q-Deck plus systems:

Fitting steps and stairs

Simple steps can be created by extending different levels of sub frame or by simply bearing the step frame on compacted hardcore and weed barrier.

You can create stairs using the Q-Deck® PLUS Multi-purpose range of products. However, it is advisable to seek the skills of an experienced tradesman.

Note: All cut ends and notches made to the timber components must be protected with a suitable brush-on end grain preservative (eg. Ensele®) to maintain the integrity of the preservative treatment on the decking.
